The premeditated fierce collision of the India Plate and Eurasia plate produced the new land. With a scale in historical mark, the series of mountains on the ancient land were squeezed, deformed , ruptured, greatly changed the geographical structure here. The Hengduan mountain, Gaoligong mountain, Yunling mountain and other high mountain system are composed of the care area of this section of land. Besides , the three famous rivers are running toward the south in parallel , namely, Langcang River, Jinsha River and Nujiang river, with the straight distance less than 80km.The landscape itself are vigorously majestic . This is the world’s largest natural heritage, called “National Scenic and Historic Interest Area of Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas”.

 

The scenic area of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas within the territory of Diqing includes the Meili Snow mountain , Haba Snow mountain, Qianhu mountain, Hongshan mountain and Laowo mountain. These five areas represent the diversification and features of biology. The geographic landscape varies in different basins. Besides, the typical resources of these areas are irreplaceable and the overall value is complimentary to each other.


 

The average altitude of Diqing Prefecture is at 3390m, and 53% of its total land areas are all above 3000. The highest peak Kawaboge Peak of Meili Snow mountain at the northern dividing line between Yunnan and Tibet with a altitude of 6740m, acting as the highest peak in Yunnan.

 

There are many high mountains, deep valleys , and snow mountains within its boundaries. The sharp upheaval and deep-cut river valleys create the world famous Lancang River Gorge and Tiger Leaping Gorge, plus numerous small and big gorges distributed between overlapping chains of mountains. Taizi Snow mountain and Haba Snow mountain are situated in a place with the lowest altitude where the China’s glaciers are distributed. At both sides of highest peak of Taizi Snow mountain, the area of glaciers reaches 73.52km㎡, and the movement velocity of such glaciers is fast and the scale of advance and retreat id large. Besides, Baimang Snow mountain is a national nature reserve with the largest area and the highest altitude in Yunnan.

The river network distributed within the two water system of Lancang River and Jiangsha River. River enrich each inch of land here. 141 first-order stream such as Adong River and Yongchun River, and 80 second-order streams such as Niru River, Shudugang River and Lapu River, carry the gigantic energy into Lancang River and Jinsha River.

 

There are many pretty lakes scattered in and between alpine valleys. Plus, 94 lakes on mountains with more than 3000m of altitude in this area. All these lakes are fresh lakes. Among them, Napa lake, Bita lake and Shudu lake are the most famous ones , dotted in Pudacuo National Park. The lake water enriches not only pasture, but also the home of wildlife whereas these lakes mean the ideal sites where grows more rare plants and valuable flowers and trees.

 

Shangrila is the true gene pool of species. The continues snow mountain from the natural barrier and allow the oldest species to preserve and multiply here. The typical dimensional climate feature allows here to be the paradise for rapid growth of various plants distributed vertically.

 

Diqing is one of the largest forest zones in China. In Diqing, where grow the euonymus bungeanus maxim, quercus variabilis, camphor, tung tree, burma pine, retinispora cypress, toon, Chinese dove tree, armand pine, hilly catalpa , spruce, redwood, alpine pine , yew and other rare tree species,

 

Whereas the average air temperature is low, the sunshine time is long and diurnal amplitude is high, this is a place particularly suitable for growth of alpine flowers.The tulip, a plant fond of low air temperature, is imported from Netherlands and bred on Diqing plateau, and the quality of such plant is even better.

 

There are approximately 1000 varieties of medical plants, such as aweto, caladium, snow lotus, picrorhia rhizome, angelica, gastrodia tuber, saffron, rhodiola root and others enjoying the great reputation both in China and foreign countries. There are also more than 100 varieties of fungus, and of such fungus, some senior edible one such as pine mushroom, sponge mushroom and chanterelle are the leading minor forest products exported for foreign market.

 

Harmoniously coexisting multinational communities


There are 26 nationalities living in or between mountains and river valleys- they live where there are rivers and grass, or work hard at planting cropping. Although such nationalities uphold different folk customs and beliefs, they can and will coexist harmoniously with each other and with rivers and mountains; each nationality plants and grows the hopes and characters on her territory.

In fact, what touch you the most are the inexperience and wisdom left over by the ancestors and contained in such history; all the carries are very practical , all the methods are quite simple, and the later generations are participating in and experiencing unknowingly the transmission and transmigrating of human civilization by means of laboring, singing and dancing.
